5 ISU Awards 2020

The trial committee of the ISU decides on awards after a test phase in the Botanical Garden in Prague. For the Innovations-Award 2020 of the International Perennial Union (ISU), eight breeders and companies submitted 53 new perennials for planting in the Botanical Garden in Prague/Czech Republic. Petr Hanzelka's team looked after and examined the plants in terms of their growth phase and then evaluated them with a further 11 perennial experts from various European countries in August. In addition to the novelty value, the stability, the habit and the abundance of flowers, the resistance was also particularly classified. "These excellent perennials clearly stand out from the wide range of varieties and we expect them to enrich our offer in the long term," said the chairman of the ISU inspection committee, Jonas Bengtsson, Sweden, summarizing the result. The International Hardy Plant Union has inter alia The aim is to award long-lasting perennials, which allow an exciting garden design also through very different plant heights. Bengtsson thanked the Botanical Garden in the Czech capital for the excellent support and cooperation.

Nepeta 'Bokratune’ Neptune

Nepeta 'Bokratune’ Neptune
Breeder: Vitroflora Grupa Producentów
This Nepeta variety remains lower and more compact than other Nepeta of its kind. It grows approx. 70 cm high and well branched with strong stems that do not fall apart. The perennial blooms profusely from June to July in a dark blue-purple hue. When flowering is over, the dark spikes continue to give color. The leaves are a fresh green. The variety prefers a sunny position in normal garden soil that should not be too dry.

Andropogon gerardii 'Darkhawks' BLACKHAWKS

Andropogon gerardii 'Darkhawks' BLACKHAWKS
Breeder: Henk de Jong, CNB
This grass has unusually dark foliage and forms a nice contrast in the bed with many perennials. It grows up to 150 cm high and the flowers are burgundy red from July to September. The leaves begin to turn deep green and fade to purple-black. This type of grass prefers a sunny location.

Silphium terebinthinaceum 'Moa Ven Toh'
Breeder: Spruyt Select GCV
'Moa Ven Toh' is more stable and graceful than the usual varieties of the species. The leaves are long and heart-shaped, the foliage is only about 30 cm long. From August to September, the perennial flowers in yellow-orange at the tip of an elegant 250 cm high stem. It prefers sunny to partially shaded locations in normal to moist soils.

Epimedium 'Sunny and Share'

Epimedium 'Sunny and Share'
Breeder: Villier Vaste Planten V.o.f.i.c.m. Compass Plants BV
The small green leaves are beautifully mottled with bronze tones, and the foliage is covered with yellow flowers in March-April. `Sunny and Share´ produces an incredible number of short flower spikes with small yellow bells. This variety is one of the longest-flowering epimedes and often produces flowers well into midsummer. It covers the ground extensively - in five years individual plants have formed a wide, evergreen carpet. The leaves become 25-30 cm high, with the flowers the variety grows to 30-35 cm. It prefers good loamy soil in sunny to light shade.

Dicentra spectabilis 'Cupid'

Dicentra spectabilis 'Cupid'
Breeder: Henk de Jong, CNB
The variety `Cupid´ blooms from April to June with pale pink flowers. It grows in a sunny to semi-sunny location in good garden soil. The plant is compact, the leaves are approx. 60 cm high and the flowers approx. 80 cm.
