Jacob Hokema new president Internationale Stauden Union

Mr. Jacob Hokema owner of Fehrle Stauden in Germany and former president of the Bund Deutscher Staudengartner was elected as the new president of the ISU at the ISU Congress in Sweden last August. The ISU (Internationale Stauden Union) had his biannual congress in the Gothenburg area in Sweden. Over 70 persons joined the very well organised congress. Visits to interesting gardens, parks, and perennial nurseries made the congress a great success.

After the delegates had elected Mr Hokema as new president, Nico Rijnbeek from the Company Rijnbeek and Son from the Netherlands accepted again a two years period as vice-president. The delegates took the decision to form a Working Group Plant names. The aim of the new Working Group is to contribute to the new International Perennial List of Names that will come out in 2010 and 2015. It is the opinion of the ISU, together with the PPA in the United States, that name changes are very bad for the perennial industry. Preparing discussions on this issue in the working group hopefully will help to make the International Plant names list more accepted by perennial growers. In the months to come the new president will form the Working Group.

It was also decided, after the very successful ISU first International Perennial Plant Conference to organise this event again in Gruenberg, Germany, next year. The ISU made reservations for the 13th, 14th, and 15th of February 2009. ISU members will receive also an invitation for next years Excursion to South Tirol (Italy) which will take place from the 11th until the 18th of July. The next congress will take place in Germany in the summer of 2008, from the 8th until the 13th of August.

The ISU Trial Committee had a serious job to do in Sweden by judging 55 cultivars send by ISU members to the Botanical Gardens in Gothenburg. The Trial Commission finally awarded four perennials: Helleborus Winter Moonbeam, Echinacea Coconut Lime, Delphinium elatum Dusky Maidens (New Millenium Series) and Astrantia major Abbey Road. Information about these awarded perennials and the companies from which the plants originated can be found in the appendix and on the ISU website www.isu-perennials.org.
